Windstar’s open bridge policy allows guests to visit, observe navigation, ask questions, and connect with the people actually guiding the ship. Spending time on the bridge with Omar and Vladimir, two of the officers of the watch, watching the ship’s course, taking photos, and talking about life at sea was a highlight. I’ve worked onboard ships for Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, and Renaissance Cruises, and I’ve sailed with 10+ cruise companies over the years. I remember when bridge access was more common before 9/11. Today, only a few lines — including Windstar Cruises and Quark Expeditions — still offer this level of openness and trust. Lagoon & Cultural Adventure in Bora Bora 🌺💙 — Windstar Cruises, Star Breeze An unforgettable day exploring Bora Bora’s pristine lagoon and vibrant culture! We started with Mana on ukulele, setting the perfect soundtrack as we cruised the turquoise waters. Three amazing snorkel stops revealed black-tip reef sharks, stingrays, tropical fish, and a stunning coral garden. 🌊🪸 We snorkeled between two boats with 11 guests on each, and more than a dozen black-tip reef sharks circled around us — an exhilarating, unforgettable experience. The lagoon shimmered with tropical fish, sergeant majors, and an array of bright clams with nearly neon-colored lips. Lunch was picnic-style at the edge of the lapping lagoon, feet in the water, surrounded by the most amazing wildlife — a large stingray and six black-tip reef sharks kept us company the entire time! The cultural demonstrations were equally fascinating: husking coconuts, weaving plates and baskets, making coconut milk from coconut shavings, all while Mana entertained with humor, stories, and lots of music. We glided around the entire island by boat, from deep channels past the barrier reef to shallow lagoons, learning about the tectonic “hot spot” that formed the Society Islands. Every stop, every splash, every laugh, every note of Mana’s ukulele made this adventure 180 Degrees from Ordinary. The perfect place to toast a big win: beautifully prepared steaks, warm ocean air, and that magical Windstar atmosphere. By day, Candles transforms into Veranda, my go-to spot for made-to-order breakfasts with eggs just how you like them, daily specials like waffles and crêpes, and don’t even get me started on the homemade cinnamon rolls. OMG. Veranda at lunch is just as tempting — fresh, flavorful specials every day. I had Asian noodles that were so good I’m still thinking about them.
